Emergency Veterinary Nurse (Mid-Advanced Level)
Friends Veterinary Specialty and Emergency is seeking compassionate, skilled veterinary nurses to join our growing team. We are a 24/7 emergency and specialty hospital in Bucks County, privately owned by local veterinarians, and we are searching for highly motivated veterinary team members
At Friends VSE, we recognize the essential role veterinary nurses play in delivering exceptional patient care. We are seeking skilled and detail-oriented Veterinary Emergency & Treatment nurses to join our specialty and emergency team. This role is responsible for providing both in-patient and out-patient treatments, assisting with various procedures and working closely with emergency veterinarians and specialty teams to ensure the highest level of patient care.

You will work closely with our CSRs, assistants, nurses (CVT/VTS), ER veterinarians, and board-certified specialists, gaining valuable skills and experience in a supportive, team-oriented environment while making a real difference in pets’ lives.

Compensation: Starting at $27- compensation will depend on skill, experience, and shift
Our Ideal Candidate would:
- Have a CVT or 2+ years of experience in a comparable emergency and/or specialty facility
Key Responsibilities
- Provide compassionate patient and client care by supporting patient comfort and safety while communicating clearly and empathetically with pet owners throughout the treatment process
- Have the ability to perform nursing tasks such as IV catheter placement, urinary catheter placement and maintenance, placement of nasoesophageal/nasogastric tubes, and nasal oxygen catheter placement
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of physiology and common disease processes to support patient assessment, anticipate clinical needs, and assist the veterinary team in delivering appropriate care
- Accurately triage incoming patients and perform physical assessments
- Collect and prepare samples for lab submission and point-of-care testing
- Maintain proper radiographic technique by ensuring correct patient positioning, adherence to radiation safety protocols, and acquisition of high-quality diagnostic images while prioritizing patient comfort and minimizing repeat exposures
- Administer subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous medications
- Have a basic understanding of medication side effects and adverse medical reactions
- Be able to administer and monitor intravenous fluid therapy, including setting up constant rate infusions (CRIs) and blood product administration
- Provide treatments and ongoing care for patients (inpatient and outpatient)
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with current veterinary resuscitation guidelines
- Monitor and care for critical and oxygen-dependent patients
- Able to recognize and manage pain in the veterinary patient
- Capable of monitoring and responding to advanced monitoring techniques
- Educate pet owners on treatments, medications, and post-procedure care
- Maintain accurate patient records and communicate updates to the care team
- Participate in continuing education to remain current with advances in veterinary emergency and critical care
- Assist with client communication
Requirements
Education & Credentials
- Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT, LVT, or RVT), with preference given to candidates with VTS certification
- Unlicensed veterinary nurses with extensive emergency and/or specialty experience are also encouraged to apply

Skills & Qualifications
- Ability to think critically while maintaining a strong attention to detail
- Basic computer proficiency with practice management software, electronic medical records, and team collaboration platforms
- Excellent written, verbal, and electronic communication skills with both team members and clients
- Strong mathematical proficiency, including accurate drug dose calculations, CRI rate determinations, fluid therapy planning, and real-time critical calculations in high-acuity situations
- Physical ability to stand/move around for extended periods of time
- The ability to kneel and work at floor level for the larger patients
- The ability to lift patients independently (up to 40 pounds) and assist with lifting larger patients when necessary
- Ability to handle patients of all sizes and temperaments
- Understand animal language/indicators of stress
- Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required in a 24/7 hospital setting
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced specialty and emergency setting
- Actively seek and incorporate feedback to improve performance
